About European Space-ody
This famous ballad (you’ll recognise it right away) was covered by our friends over at the European Space Agency, who, when they’re not working hard exploring the Earth and our Solar System, spend their lunch breaks and evenings celebrating their twin passions: space flight and fabulous classic rock music. Who are we to disagree?

‘European Space-ody’ was written, performed and recorded by the Film Academy and the Musicians Group, two of the employee social clubs at ESA’s ESOC space operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany. It features many of the engineers, scientists, assorted boffins and their friends working at mission control – and, if you watch closely, you may spot a certain, famous musician in a cameo walk-on.

The producers took pains to mention: all maskless scenes were recorded prior to the Corona era. They advise: Wear a mask, wash your hands and stay socially distanced. Sincere thanks to Brian May and Queen. May the music never

European Space Agency missions mentioned in this video:

** Aeolus () – First mission to acquire profiles of Earth’s wind on a global scale and now helping boost the accuracy of weather forecasts to improve everyday life

** BepiColombo () – Joint ESA-Japan mission and the most advanced probe ever to visit Mercury, the least-explored planet of the inner Solar System

** Cluster () – A formation of 4 spacecraft whose data are enabling scientists to build a three-dimensional model of Earth’s magnetosphere und understand the Sun-Earth connection.

** ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter TGO () – Joint ESA/Roscosmos mission that is searching for evidence of methane and other trace atmospheric gases that could be signatures of active biological or geological processes

** Gaia () – Creating an extraordinarily precise three-dimensional map of more than a thousand million stars throughout our Milky Way galaxy and beyond

** Galileo () – Galileo is Europe’s own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service

** MarsExpress () – In orbit around the Red Planet since December 2003, this mission is imaging Mars’ surface, mapping its minerals, identifying the composition and circulation of its tenuous atmosphere, probing beneath its crust, and exploring how phenomena such as the solar wind interacts in the martian environment.

** METERON () – The “Multi-Purpose End-to-End Robotics Operations Network” is a research activity aiming to develop the communication networks, robot interfaces and hardware needed to operate robots from a distance in space

About Space
Space Rocks is a celebration of the art, music, and culture inspired by space exploration, in association with ESA. Our first event was held in 2018 and we host a weekly livestream called Uplink which is hosted by co-founders Alexander Milas and Mark McCaughrean, ESA's senior advisor for science and exploration.
